Public safety officials use reliable systems to alert you and your family in the event of natural or man-made disasters. Many communities also offer emergency alert notifications through their own systems. Check with the Integrated Public Alert & Warning System Authorities website to learn what is available in your area. A Glance at Active Shooter Events Active shooter events (ASEs) are occurring more frequently. ASEs involve one or more persons engaged in killing or attempting to kill multiple people in an area occupied by multiple unrelated individuals. } The Federal Bureau of Investigation recently released a study showing data from 2000 to 2013: } 160 ASEs occurred } 486 killed } 557 wounded } 70% of the shootings occurred in places open to pedestrian traffic } 39 shooting occurred in places of education } In the first half of the years studied, the average annual number of incidents was 6.4, but that average rose in the second half of the study to 16.4, an average of more than one incident per month.
