He looked at me in the eye and I smiled at him. He was very shy but when I asked him, ilan taon ka na?, he politely said, 11 po... ay! 12 na po pala! Birthday ko nga pala ngayon. I then greeted him a very happy birthday as I proceeded with my next question, ilan kayo magkakapatid? Siyam (9) po, Allen said. Mag-iingat ka lagi Allen at pagpalain ka ng Diyos, I said. Before we parted ways, I asked him if its OK to have his photo taken and he agreed. I was teary-eyed but I held back my tears. I didnt want the little kid to see how sad I was, looking at him. As I say goodbye and without knowing if Ill ever bump into this little boy again, I said a little prayer for him- may he grow up to be a fine man, may he be safe always and may the Lord send angels to watch over him. ... When I uploaded these pictures the moment I get in the clinic, I realized that the kid standing right next to me represents millions of needy and hungry kids in the Philippines. How many more children skip a phase in their childhood-- trade playing games and going to school-- to work and make money to buy food (rice, especially), to feed their family? Please help lessen their hunger by accepting the Rice Bucket Challenge. A bucket of rice grains can be of great help to get them through the day; days even.
