Another awesome day at Rocky Mountain Folks Festival. I was introduced to two artists I had not heard of before: First, I took in spoken word artist Shane Koyczan, and his band Short Story Long. Shane is smart, funny, self-deprecating, and passionate, and somehow universal. His piece about a friend who "died instantly" was heartbreaking. Later in the night, I heard the John Butler Trio for the first time. A powerful trio with a huge sound, socially conscious lyrics, tasteful use of effects and pedals, and unusual touches like digeridoo, stand-up bass, and bells. Fans of this group knew every word and sang and danced along. Very cool. I also saw Amy Speace, Arthur Lee Land, and the great Patty Griffin. What a day!!!! Every show was completely different, and wonderful in its own right. Loved every minute.
