Another colorful page from Pageland’s wild west days. In August of 1928 there was a shootout in the Dudley area that left one man dead and another critically injured. The duel seems to be the result of that most famous of geometric forms – a love triangle. It appears that Mr. Malcolm Plyler and his wife were having issues and Mrs. Plyler had moved to a house on the Robert Funderburk farm. On Sunday afternoon Mr. Plyler visited his wife at the house she was staying. After leaving, Mr. Funderburk and Mr. Plyler happened up on each other near a spring about 7 PM. Shots were fired and Funderburk was killed at the scene. Mr. Plyler was seriously wounded. When police examined their pistols, they found that Funderburk had fired 3 times and Plyler 4 times. Both men were in their mid-fifties.
