Another example for Ulamaa facing rulers is Imam Mohiy-al-din - TopicsExpress

Another example for Ulamaa facing rulers is Imam Mohiy-al-din Al-Nawawi, author of numerous works and mentor of various distinguished scholars. For example, Imam Nawawi undertook many political struggles to support the rights of Damascene people when Baibars confiscated a number of properties in Damascus. Nawawi sent to Baibars advising him to do what is consistent with the laws of Islam, clarifying his role as a ruler towards his people, and explaining the harm he has inflicted upon them and the need to reverse his decrees. He also sent to Baibars, when he undertook measures against teachers barring them from teaching except in one Madrasa (akin to universities today), something which affected their incomes, urging him to respect teachers and their role in society. Nawawis messages and stances towards the ruler were never begging or calls for help, but were firm positions against the sultan to abide by Shariah. Thus, when Baibars refused receiving his messages, the Imam stood firmly against him, and objected once to a threat he had received in response to a message on reducing taxes. This was not the last of the encounters between the sultan and the imam, Nawawi also stood to Baibars when he wanted to confiscate property to prepare for war, and he was exiled from Damascus as a result, which pushed the Ulamaa of Damascus to stand against Baibars and force him to return Nawawi back.
