Another great story contribution by Glenda Grubbs - - Here’s another back story for you----In 1992, Gary played Leonardo DiCaprio’s truck driving father on two episodes of Growing Pains. Leonardo was 18 years old, but looked much younger, and young girls all over the country were tuning in to see him! You can only imagine how excited our 9 year old daughter, Molly Grubbs, was at getting this autographed picture from him! (Dad came through on that one!) The sitcom rehearsed Monday –Thursday, and then on Friday night it was filmed in front of a live audience. Well, Gary came down with a bad case of tonsillitis and had a fever and was about to lose his voice! A Doctor came on the set to treat him, and told him he really should go home and go to bed, but he knew he wouldn’t/couldn’t! The show MUST go on! In fact, Leonardo was leaving immediately after the taping to catch an airplane to start on the movie, This Boy’s Life, with Robert DeNiro. Later, when Leo (that’s what Gary called him) starred in Titanic, everywhere Gary went young girls wanted to get Gary’s signature. Most of them didn’t know his name, but they knew he was “Leonardo’s daddy.” A few years ago Gary ran into Leonardo in the Fox Studio parking lot. Gary was not sure Leonardo would remember him, but when he saw Gary, he greeted him with, “How’s it going Pops?” They had a nice a visit.
