Another guzzler successfully installed on Kure! If you look closely at the photo on the left (try not to be too distracted by all the nesting albatross) youll see something in the background that stands out. What you are looking at is Kures most recently installed guzzler unit. Whats a guzzler? Simply put, a guzzler is a water catchment and collection system used to provide a water source for wildlife. In Kures case the guzzlers are used to create an artificial wetland environment for some of our most recent residents... 28 endangered Laysan ducks. How it works: The picture on the right is a close up of an installed unit. Rain collects on slanted corrugated roof panels and a gutter at the low end of the roof diverts the water directly into the collection tank. The roof of the guzzler has a dual purpose. Not only does it aid in the collection of water it also provides a shady oasis beneath it. All units are equipped with an insert that fits into the collection tank which creates a ramp so wildlife can get in and out no matter what the water level happens to be.
