Another instance in which many feel justified in aiming the arm of the state at other folks..............unsupervised kids. Think before you call CPS on people who parent differently than you. Unless the child is being abused or is in eminent danger, there has to be a better way than causing another family untold anguish and possibly having the kids wrenched from a warm and loving home and thrust into foster care. And in this instance? I think that a ten year old is more than capable of walking on his or her own, especially if they are prepared as this child was. I was travelling a mile to and from school on public transportation since I was 8 and it was not too much for me. People will inevitably say that times are different now, but statistics do not bear it out. And Bushwick in the late 60s/early 70s was no suburban paradise at any rate. Most of us would not let our ten year old walk alone. I know I would not. Why is that? Do we really believe they are unsafe or do we fear the censure of others and the long arm of the law?
