Another one of my favorite movies is a musical that bombed at the box office. Streets of Fire has an amazing cast including the always terrific Diane Lane, the awesome Willem Defoe, Rick Moranis, Amy Madigan (who should be more famous than she is), a young Rick Rossovich and Bill Paxton, the talented Robert Townsend, and Mykelti Williamson, and even Elizabeth Daily (Valley Girl). The Rock and Roll Fable, as they billed it, is a great mix of science fantasy and music (by the underrated Ry Cooder) that I found really captivating. I don’t think there’s anything about the film I didn’t like. I do remember, however, upon first seeing Willem Dafoe that I thought he was so unique looking that I found it hard to imagine him having much of a career. How happy I was to not only be wrong, but lucky enough to have had the opportunity to work with him on a couple of projects and could not have found a nicer guy. Oddly enough I also had the same thought for a young Steve Buscemi in Parting Glances. Again, such a unique look that I thought he’d be type cast in roles that wouldn’t allow for much of a career. How wrong I was. And how happy I am. Again, the movie bombed at the box office so it’s not for everyone, but on a quiet weekend night when the lights are out and the world is a million miles away, it’s one of my guilty pleasures.
