Another one of those less common catches. Alex Schmidt caught this beautiful St Joseph or Elephant fish using a prawn and white mussel bait on a 3/0 Mustad hook and a Shimano Ultegra 10 000 reel. The fish was caught at Haaibankies near Mosselbay. These unusual fish, part of the shark family, are endemic to our region and are only found from Walvisbay in Namibia to Durban, KZN. They can reach 1.2 m at an age of about 12 years.Males mature at around 44 cm or 3 years old while females mature later at about 50 cm or 4 years old and they are believed to only have 2 offspring per annual cycle. They feed off of sea urchins, bivalves, crabs, shrimps and some species of slow moving bony fish. The spine on the dorsal fin is reported to cause a painful slow healing wound if it penetrates the skin.
