Another outstanding week here at the MGMC&SC. Congratulations to Maj Brewster our AFMS dental educator of the year, to our 5 Team Andrews annual award winners (posted on FB) and to our TWO Coin of Excellence winners this month (see expanded staff slides on SharePoint) for going above and beyond to get the mission done. I know there is still some anxiety out there about the force shaping boards but every day I am more and more convinced that Malcolm Grow Medics are that Airmen the Air Force cannot live without. This brings me to the next topic on becoming a good leader, developing the traits of a problem solver. Being able to move past road blocks without seeking revised instruction is a valued skill in any organization. But lets not forget that this skill follows followership for a reason. If you have not mastered being a good follower becoming a problem solver can be disruptive. As stated 2 weeks ago great followers are intelligent, committed and courageous. These characteristics are important when facing obstacles. Problem solvers figure out how to get around obstacles but if you have not fully grasped the intent of the order given, then the solution to overcome the obstacle can lead you in the wrong direction and hamper rather than help the mission. It goes without saying that the very nature of obstacles require commitment to overcome...if it was easy they would not be called obstacles. Without this commitment to the mission obstacles can easily lead to either whining or inaction. Finally, to be a problem solver and lead others past obstacles in the path of completing the mission requires true courage. Making a decision to do something, the very core of problem solving, and taking responsibility for it right or wrong is not for the weak. Leaders MAKE DECISIONS which empowers those under their command to DO SOMETHING. To paraphrase the Walt Disney quote I used in expanded staff earlier this month true success comes when we stop talking and start doing. Lets all get out there and do something to make our patients lives better! An honor to serve at your side,
