Another story which is a good illustration of how a few of the local folk behave! We had an old tan Austin Allegro sitting in the drive at Millburn, “doon the Monkey Road”. It was in an awful state and there was no way it would pass its next MOT, although it was still possible to drive it. A group of young lads came to the door and dad answered it. “We want tae buy yer motor, “ they said and then handed over 100 quid in cash (it was an awful lot of money then!) Dad asked to see their driving licenses and any other relevant papers and thought, why not, better give these lads a wee project than send it to the scrap yard. Dad was always doing up motors but it had got too much for him of late. He thought that if they were a bad sort, they would just have nicked it, rather than shelling out cash. And we had had more than our fair share of burglaries then, living in such an isolated place. For the rest of the evening we heard nothing but screaming tyres and a screeching engine as they raced it up and down the old railway from the Nikky Wood to the old railway bridge (there was a bank constructed under the bridge, probably to limit the length of the race track!) As it grew dark, we heard an almighty BOOM! They had deliberately blown it up! It joined the rusted out remains of many a burnt-out car to be found on the old railway and at the side of the Monkey Road. Dad just shook his head and laughed in disbelief. If any of the culprits are reading this, was it worth the 100 quid? Christine Wallace
