Another synesthete or a wielder of metaphor? Lafcadio Hearn, the subject of my novel-in-progress, on why he includes Japanese words in his writings: "For me words have color, form, character; they have faces, ports, manners, gesticulations; they have moods humours, eccentricities; --they have tints, tones, personalities. That they are unintelligible [to most of my readers] makes no difference at all."
