Another way in which evangelical meta-discourse about the Bible seems divorced from the reality of discipleship is when the Bible is conceived as a book of rules to be obeyed. Ive come across some rules when I read the Bible as a disciple, but honestly not many. Mostly I find glimpses of the character of Christ to emulate and an account of the goodness of God to inspire and convict me. When God tells me to do something, its usually an implication of something in the text that wounds my heart, not in the form of a direct command. This is why all the meta-talk about obedience smells like posturing to me.
