Another wonderful, and SUPER creative, idea our friend Micki shared with us. What a brilliant way to think outside the box while teaching, and utilize NAEIRs resources! Hello, my name is Micki Flores. I live in a small remote town in West Texas. I saw that NAEIR had a box of nearly 2000 pencils. I teach 7th and 8th grade math and thought it would be an engaging lesson on volume, proportions, and surface area if I were to purchase the pencils. Therefore, I ordered them in class one day. We then found a box of 12 pencils in the supply closet. While we were waiting on the pencils from NAEIR to arrive, I had the class find the volume of the box of 12 pencils, and set it up as a portion to the bigger box. By predicting the volume, they then created a box from poster board and duct tape for the 2000 pencils (I added in the extra pencils to make it a box of 2000). Once the pencils arrived they had to take them and place them in their box. It was fun to see the different shapes of the boxes and whether or not their predictions were close or way off. I then had them write in their journals what they thought was correct with their predictions and where they could have improved upon. It was a super fun project and thanks to NAEIR I didn’t have to spend a lot of money. The students took the pencils they wanted, and shared the rest with classes in the building.
