Answer to todays Grammar Challenge about the sentence, Theres - TopicsExpress

Answer to todays Grammar Challenge about the sentence, Theres nothing like a nice baloney sandwich after a hard days work. ***** There are two errors here. BALONEY should be spelled BOLOGNA, and DAYS should be singular possessive: DAYS. BALONEY is the correct spelling for the word that means nonsense or malarkey. The lunch meat is spelled just like the city in Italy: BOLOGNA. The expression a hard days work requires a singular possessive. It refers to the work that figuratively belongs to a particular day. There are no other grammatical problems with the sentence. THERES is a common contraction for THERE IS. NICE is a common adjective meaning pleasant or enjoyable. No comma is required in this sentence. If the prepositional phrase AFTER A HARD DAYS WORK were moved to the beginning of the sentence, it would require a comma after it, but not when it appears at the end. Several of you reversed the sentence by beginning with the phrase AFTER A HARD DAYS WORK. I find this curious. Certainly you may prefer the sound of the sentence that way, and its possible that, in context, you might like to emphasize the bologna sandwich by placing it at the end, but these are issues of aesthetics and style, not grammar. The sentence is correct either way.
