Anthology of South African War Poems from the Recent Conflicts - TopicsExpress

Anthology of South African War Poems from the Recent Conflicts This is an invitation to submit poems written by South Africans, on all sides, about their experiences in the Angolan, Border and Internal Conflicts. The experiences of war, like other important human experiences, have found expression in poetry throughout the ages, although it was the poetry of the First World War that first made the genre popular. This was probably because of both the sheer scale of human involvement in the war and the fact that many well-known poets of the day saw active service. Several were killed, including some of the brightest and best, such as Wilfred Owen and Rupert Brooke. Since then there has been a focus on collecting the poems of soldiers and others affected by war and many anthologies have been published. The most recent of these is the British “Heroes” anthology of poems from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. We know that many South Africans have written poems about their experiences in the recent conflicts and we want to let their voices be heard. The last South African anthology of war poetry was “Soldiers Verse”, compiled by John Dovey, and we think it is time for another. Although this was originally conceived of as an English poetry project, depending on the response, consideration would be given to producing either a bilingual anthology or separate English and Afrikaans anthologies. Please submit your English or Afrikaans contributions, as many as you like, to Kevin Mulligan at kevin(at)mulligan(dot)co(dot)za. Please include your name and contact details and, if you think it necessary or appropriate, some background to each poem.
