Anthony Bourdain is doing a special Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown on Detroit. Showing the industrial utopia built at the turn of the century emptied now into a playground of urban decay and dreams of what once was. Ford motor company, the home of the Packard all detroyed and quiet with time in a haunting sense. Like viewing the titanic at the bottom of the ocean. Architectural skeletons. He literally said Detroit is screwed and the only other place hed compare it to was Chernobyl. lol But then we have the Heidelberg Project - an attempt to bring art to the ground zero-esque scenery..... and the coney dogs. :P The victorian estates of the rich and powerful have fallen into nothing but piles of brick... but their one hundred year old gardens continue to bloom. Its a strange sight. Ghost Gardens they call them. 5000 arsons a year that are slowly wiping the cityscape closer to the ground. Below is a picture of Detroits Central Station now and then. A gorgeous design modeled after a roman bath doing nothing but rotting away now..... The arts community thrives however. It has its own underground bohemian vibe of hole in the wall galleries that throw after hours parties with gourmet dishes and fine wines with guests consisting of forward thinking intellectuals, writers, poets, artists and entrepreneurs. This is a side of Detroit the world as a whole rarely sees.
