Anthony is doing really good! Got some new stretches to do for - TopicsExpress

Anthony is doing really good! Got some new stretches to do for upper body and upper extremities to help with the increased resting muscle tone that he has. Diet changes due to lack of appetite and weight loss since injury. Has to drink lots of liquids especially Gatorade. To keep from getting dehydrated and help with low blood pressure. He is supposed to eat a lot of salt so that he can hopefully retain a little fluid which will help with the blood pressure and orthostatic hypotension. His strength is great. Sensation is improving and he may see improvement in sensation for years to come as the nerves continue to regenerate. His DXA (bone density) scan and renal ultrasound were both normal. He does has very tight tendons and muscle due to the increased muscle tone. He needs to do stretches for that problem. Again they cannot really give any kind of prognosis about any problems hes having because him and God are breaking all the rules when it comes to spinal cord injury. Every person that came to assess him said things like, Im really not used to having patients that are upright or can walk. One of the providers told him he was a poor excuse for a SCI patient. Praise God!! Dr. Vogel said that his actual spinal cord is probably as back to normal as its going to get. He said on films you might see a little narrowing forever. He does have a lesion that is still visible on the spinal cord and that is something we just have to watch. Dr said that sometimes patients will get a little calcification there but as long as it stays immobile and doesnt get big enough to cause symptoms we just know its there and watch it. No football, no contact sports, no diving, no jerky roller coasters, no jumping, flipping, wrestling with buddies, and hold off on driving as long as possible--he may have to have hand controls to drive depending on sensation and spacial orientation in feet. Because the vertebrae and the spinal cord, especially the spinal cord, have been injured severely he will always be more prone to re-injure it. Unless there are problems we dont have to go back to Chicago for a year!! Yah-hoo!! We will be home today!! Thank you all for your prayers, support, and love.
