Anti-Americanism and Other Myths By Antonis H. Diamataris The fairy tale castles we grew up with are collapsing one after the other. One of these was the power of the state to maintain an affluent population regardless of the level of competitiveness and productivity of a country. Those children’s stories came to an end with the current economic crisis. Another tale was that America was ceaselessly conspiring against Greek interests. Now comes a series recent of revelations that have crushed this myth, too. Tucked deep into a New York Times story about the problems besetting U.S. President Barack Obama’s relationship with German Chancellor Angela Merkel as a result of Washington’s monitoring of her phone calls is that he personally asked her to help Greece. So much for the old myth! The Times reveals that “After other world leaders had left a Group of 8 meeting in Camp David last year, Mr. Obama invited Ms. Merkel to stay for a sunset chat about the mounting pressure on Germany, not least from him, to help Greece with an American-style bailout and fiscal stimulus program. Despite all that, Ms. Merkel rebuffed Mr. Obama’s entreaties to do more to bail out Greece.” That is for the history books.
