Any trophy will do - Fergie 20 October By Joe Bernstein Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has told the club’s fans they should be delighted with any trophy this season — even the League Cup. Ferguson famously took four years to land his first piece of silverware when he arrived at Old Trafford in 1986 and insists it would be an ‘incredible achievement’ if new manager David Moyes was able to deliver a trophy in his debut campaign. ‘David must just try to maintain what we have done for the last 20-odd years,’ said Ferguson, speaking on MUTV ahead of the launch of his autobiography. ‘That’s the key. He shouldn’t try to do anything better or less. Keep the success going, it’s not easy to win a trophy in our league. ‘There are probably six teams fighting for the title. Ourselves, City and Chelsea are the big favourites, Arsenal have started well and so have Liverpool and Tottenham. It’s going to be an incredible tussle. ‘For David, winning a trophy would be an incredible achievement this year. It doesn’t matter what it is. Whether it’s the League Cup, the FA Cup, the European Cup or the Premier League. ‘We’ve always had priorities here — and David is aware of that. I hope he achieves it. He’s got great support. ‘It’s a fantastically well run football club but, like every club, he needs a little bit of luck.’ His view on Moyes so far is that some of the criticism United have received after early defeats against Liverpool and West Bromwich has been unfair. ‘The Liverpool game was agony,’ he said. ‘I can’t believe the criticism United got after that game. I thought David was right: we did play well.’ – Mail On Sunday
