Anyone who is thinking about self-publishing a book, thought Id share my journey of self-publishing #2. They say publishing a book is like having a baby. Its an apt analogy. First who to get into bed with. I decided to not screw my crew and instead jumped into bed with a Melbourne mob. They had good credentials. My team are busy I thought. Keep it separate I thought. Then the company loved me and left me. Right in the middle of our romance. They decided to move from one state of Australia to another IN THE MIDDLE OF MY DEADLINE and TELL ME ON THE DAY THEY WERE MOVING. No warning, just see ya! Dont worry everything will be okay. Well be in touch every day. Then NOTHING. Non contactable for days. I kept reaching out. I want you. I need you! Dont leave me! I thought it was all over. Loved and let down. Left all on my own with nothing to show for it. And then finally contact. I demanded my working files. Id finish it off myself I thought (hmm interesting analogy there!) Only to discover they didnt even know InDesign 101. The whole thing had to be reset up (they didnt even get the size right!), style sheets were not correctly established. The list goes on. I get into bed with another. The printer. I beg them, I plead them to reduce their usual turnaround from 2 weeks to 1 week. SO I WOULD HAVE BOOKS IN HAND FOR MY FIRST BOOK LAUNCH IN SYDNEY ON MONDAY. Im in pain! This thing is killing me. I see Annette Sym who has sold millions of copies of cook books at a dinner on Saturday. Dont worry darling. Youre crowning she tells me. It hurts! Does it ever Annette! Ouch!! Anyways, panic stations after panic stations, late night after late night, wondering if it is all worth it, and today I get a message from the printer your books are printed and bound, ready to go! Hallelujah! I WILL have books for my launch in Sydney on Monday after all and I have just given birth to another book. Friggen glad that process is all over. Just like children here are my famous last words NEVER AGAIN! All you beautiful people who already ordered your copy, theyll be in the post next week or Ill see you at the book launches around the country and give you your personal signed copy.
