The highest form of idolatry (or lowest form, depending on your point of view), is complete and utter self-focus! Life is not about me! My existence is not for my glory. My purpose in life is two-fold: to fellowship with God and to make Him known to others! That perspective helps expose the idols in my life and makes it easy to tear them down.
