Apparently it is no longer sufficient to be the world renowned centre for torture, kidnapping, persecutor of whistle-blowers and repressor of all public dissent, now the grand old US of A is turning back to bad old days of active eugenics. Staff at the California Institution for Women, in Corona, and Valley State Prison for Women, in Chowchilla, ignored state requirements that stipulate that all sterilization procedures for inmates must go for review to the state medical board, and signed up pregnant women for tubal ligations to be performed immediately after birth. The Center for Investigative Reporting broke this appalling fact last Sunday. The report included an interview with Crystal Nguyen, a former Valley State Prison inmate who worked in the prison’s infirmary during 2007, who said she often overheard medical staff asking inmates who had served multiple prison terms to “agree” to be sterilized. “I was like, ‘Oh my God, that’s not right,’” Nguyen, 28, said. “Do they think they’re animals, and they don’t want them to breed anymore?” Is there any low to which the United States won’t stoop? I guess not.
