Apple fingers app for award MARCH 5 2014 12:00AM A COMPANY that started life three years ago in an Old Beach bedroom is fast becoming the worlds leading provider of software for artists who choose to use computers instead of paints and pencils. James Cuda and wife Alanna teamed with computer programmer Lloyd Bottomley and graphic designer Cameron Newton to develop Procreate, a $5.99 iPad app that enables artists to paint, or draw, photorealistic pictures using their fingers or a stylus. UK artist Kyle Lambert caused a sensation in December when he used his fingers and Procreate to create a portrait of actor Morgan Freeman. People found it hard to believe Lambert’s painting was not a photograph. Mr Cuda, 34, said his team had decided it wasn’t necessary to move to California’s Silicon Valley or to take money from venture capitalists to get their tech start-up off the ground. “We just concentrated on making something that was really good,’’ he said. He said Procreate wasn’t an instant hit when it appeared on Apple’s iTunes store. It sat on the launch pad for about year before blasting off suddenly late last year. Apple has rewarded Mr Cuda’s company, Savage Interactive, with a coveted Apple Design Award and the company has invited him to speak at Sydney’s Apple store tomorrow night. Mr Cuda said Procreate was aimed at commercial artists who were using it for Hollywood storyboards, picture book illustrations and architect’s impressions, but it was also attracting recreational artists. Mr Cuda said Savage Interactive was determined to remain as a Tasmanian company, potentially employing dozens of Tasmanians on multiple projects. Its workforce of eight now fills an Old Beach house.
