April 24 1970 A pre-dawn tornado at 0320 AM formed over Whitehaven and the second formed over Southaven at 0330 AM and a third one formed over Whitehaven at 0335 AM, All three of these inflicted heavy structural damage within its path of destruction. . The Memphis Fire Department sent additional man power and equipment to assist with rescue and recovery. Fire Chief Edward Hamilton responded to command the response. After leaving Whitehaven the destruction didn’t stop. It went on to damage 33 airplanes as it took the roofs off of several hangers at the Airport and then went on to severely damage parts of Parkway Village and from there it damaged many homes near Mt Moriah and Quince.21 people injured. 5 buildings were destroyed, 28 other buildings were heavily damaged, and to a lesser degree 417 other buildings... The MFD sent 125 men and 25 additional pieces of equipment. The MFD received the first call at 0336 AM; Engine 32 on Presidents Island reported all of the power was out on the Island. At 0335 AM Station 42 reported their power was out, At 0337 IS a report of a Structure Fire 2629 Aldridge Dr. This was the first of 74 received alarms connected with this storm. In addition the fire department received 117 other calls, 53 Ambulance calls, and 43 other storm related calls for assistance. MFD responded to more than 525 buildings to cover roofs and broken windows..
