April 25th: Oliver Cromwell! If you dont know this guy, then you should! Born on this day in 1599, he was a military leader, political dominator and Lord Protector of a short lived country known as the Commonwealth of England, Scotland and Ireland. Oliver lived relatively unnoticeable life until he underwent a Puritan religious conversion in his 40s. He was elected to the Short and Long Parliaments in the 1640s, then siding against the King in English Civil War, he quickly rose from leading a small group of cavalry to being the commander of the New Model Army. Nicknamed Old Ironsides, he played a major role in defeating the British Loyalist, later leading the army against both the Irish and Scottish. In 1649, he was the principal signatories on the order to behead King Charles I. Then he took up the reigns as the leader of the Rump Parliament during the years of the Commonwealth of England. He enacted harsh laws against Roman Catholics, bordering on genocide, which were the minority in England and Scotland, but the majority of Ireland. Eliminating the Rump Parliament by force, and creating a new Barebones Parliament of those who supported him, these men appointed him Lord Protector of the now Commonwealth of England, Scotland and Ireland. In 1658, the Royalists returned to power after his death of natural causes. He is hailed as regicidal dictator, military dictator, hero of liberty and genocidal tyrant, it all depends on what perspective you are raised to believe.
