April 30, 2014 John 15:10–11 (ESV) If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. Hanging out with Jesus One of my favorite things to do during Thanksgiving and Christmas (what some refer to as the holidays) is to do nothing much of anything except hangout with my family. Just living and laughing and eating and playing games. Nothing too exciting but extremely rewarding. When Jesus tells his disciples to abide in him, that word implies hanging out, living life, and remaining in him. We can live a very rewarding, content, and peaceful existence by abiding in Christ; however, it is not easy to do because it goes against everything the world tells us is important. Living life for ourselves by pursuing temporal rewards like material possessions, popularity, or worldly importance promises good things but only returns the desire for more of the same. On the other hand, when we truly learn to abide in Christ we learn what Paul called the secret of Christian living in Philippians 4:11, 12. At this point in my life, I am still learning the secret that Paul discovered. Piece by piece, day by day I learn that God has greater goals in mind for me than being a CEO, something more lasting, more important, and more rewarding. What he is teaching me is hanging out with Jesus is better than anything the world can offer or entice me with. Each of us has a job to do and God does indeed want us to do it very well, as unto his glory. But ultimately, the eternal reward of having that deep love for him and a deeper relationship with his son is what will finally bring us the peace that passes all human understanding.
