April 4, 2014 Internet to Ubernet by Kerby Anderson Recently Bob Unruh wrote about how the Internet will turn into the Ubernet within the next decade. By that he means that our experience with the Internet will become an everyday part of our lives. A report from the Pew Research Internet Project predicted that the Internet would be a seamless part of how we live our everyday lives. Joe Touch, director of the University of Southern Californias Information Sciences Institute explained that the Internet will become a background capability. In other words, we wont think about going online or looking on the Internet for something—well just be online, and just look. For that to happen, we will probably move into a world where Internet devices are mobile, wearable, and embedded computing. This isnt a good thing for people (like my wife) whose health is adversely affected by electromagnetic fields. Another concern is the impact a pervasive Internet will have on our lives and our last vestiges of privacy. John Markhoff, senior science writer for the New York Times, asks this question. What happens the first time you answer the phone and hear your mother or a close friend, but its actually not, and instead, is a piece of malware that is designed to social engineer you? The report described both the good and bad aspect of our Internet future. Areas of concern focused on interpersonal ethics, surveillance, terror, and crime. Some fear that government will become much more effective in using the Internet as an instrument of political and social control. We will also be more interconnected than ever before. The report said that more than 7 billion humans on this planet will sooner or later be connected to each other and fixed destinations, via the Uber (not Inter) net. Many believe this will move us closer to a globalism where geographic boundaries are less significant. We need to craft a path for a future Internet so that it is a network of freedom rather than a political means of social control.
