Chisholm Trail Heritage Center, 1000 Chisholm Trail Parkway, Duncan, OK Allan Houser: Legend Born Free June 1 – August 15, 2014 Born to parents who survived the Ft. Sill Apache internment, Allan Houser became one of the most recognized artists of the 20th century. In celebration of his 100th birthday, the Chisholm Trail Heritage Center presents Allan Houser: Legend Born Free. The exhibit will engage visitors in the life of the Ft. Sill Apache from the time of the Chisholm Trail to present. Told through the eyes of tribal members, settlers and soldiers, the exhibit portrays the hardships and strife of frontier life and the eventual successes of settling “the territory” and subsequent changes that occurred during Mr. Houser’s lifetime. Forged in this environment, the work of Allan Houser is a reflection of the man and times he lived. Featured work in the CTHC permanent collection, Desert Flower (1993), will be on display as well as loaned pieces from other collections. On special loan from the Allan Houser Foundation, the exhibition "Illustrations" features a selection of original tempera paintings and pen & ink drawings from the collection of the Allan Houser archives which were used as book illustrations published in 7 separate titles between 1954 and 1962. Tour groups are encouraged – educators in period dress, creativity exercises for all ages, and chuck wagon meals available. This event is a part of the Allan Houser 100th Birthday Celebration at museums throughout Oklahoma in 2014. Our celebration will be July 26, 2014 beginning at 10 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Artists are welcome to sell, as well as demonstrate. We would also like to have dancers perform. Thank you for your help!
