Apropos of the discussion of Shapiro and imagination, heres a 20-minute documentary on a man who seems destined to become known as a uniquely gifted but secretive genius, a sort of cosmic wunderkinden who wrapped up profound insights into the nature of reality in self-protective riddles. The narrator Leonard Nimoy asks whether Leedskalnins sweet sixteen -- the mysterious person for whom he built his mysterious Coral Castle -- was a real person or an ideal, a symbol of all that is good. Of course she was both. This is what Shapiro cannot seem to grasp. His methodology begins by chopping reality up into false antitheses like the difference between biography and allegory and pure imagination. Used as Shapiro uses them, these terms are just hobgoblins to scare people away from thinking more synthetically about Shakespeare. Warning: this is a documentary about a VERY strange person -- humble, goodhearted, disciplined, and apparently a genius of the highest order.
