Arabs...is your family like mine? I come from a family of doctors. Dont be fooled noone has a degree. But they all know one thing...that amoxcil fixes everything and that everything that happens is the result of saf2et 7owah (a cold wind). Yesterday I took Moey to the hospital to get some tests done. His leg is really infected and theres a chance hes got a bone infection...and may need another op :( Hey mum! My grandma woke up this morning and the left side of her mouth was drooping. He tells me casually. What do you mean, drooping Moey? He makes a face trying to describe what happened. I panic but calmly tell him Moe she needs to go to hospital. She may have had a stroke! I grab my phone and call his dad Hey Naka your mum needs to go to hospital. Its probably nothing but she needs to be checked to make sure she hasnt had a stroke. You see my precious ex mother in law is in her 60s. Shes a heavy smoker and an even heavier stresser! We get Moeys tests done and head towards the emergency department where an ambulance is just pulling in. My sister in law comes over and tells me her mums blood pressure is through the roof and that she fought them tooth and nail, not to get in the ambulance. I laugh. My mother in law is all of a 150cm but that little woman is made of steel mashallah. She wreckons its saf2et 7owah (cold wind). I laugh...the Arab families reason for everything. She goes on to tell me My mum went to a doctor who gave her cortisone and said nothing was wrong... I shake my head. These doctors are the ones I call taxi drivers playing doctors. But when I called our normal GP he said it sounds like a stroke...take her straight to hospital! And thats exactly right I say she can get checked out and go home. But its always better to be safe than sorry. A few hours later she was released with the all clear and told to see her doctor for her blood pressure stuff. I cry in relief. I really love this woman and I feel like her daughter, not her ex daughter-in-law...after 20 years of divorce shes never let me feel otherwise. Now I want you guys to understand the importance of acting quickly if someone has signs of a stroke... And it is not limited to old people. Its the signs for everyone from the kid to the centarian... If you get them to hospital.quick enough doctors can give them something known as a clot buster to dissolve the clot that could potentially lead to severe disabilities or death. Its a matter of acting quickly to ensure the least damage and literally saving someones life. What are the signs? Remember the word F.A.S.T. Both because its how quickly you should act and is also an acronym for what to look for: Face: Has their mouth dropped? Arms: Can they lift both arms? Speech: Is their speech slurred? Times: Call 000 straight away and write down the exact time that it started. A stroke is ALWAYS a medical emergency. A stroke is not a heart attack. A stroke happens when the supply of blood to the brain is suddenly interrupted. Some strokes are fatal while others cause permanent or temporary disability. The longer a stroke remains untreated, the greater the chance of stroke related brain damage. Facial weakness, arm weakness and difficulty with speech are the most common symptoms or signs of stroke, but they are not the only signs. Other signs of stroke may include one, or a combination of: * Weakness or numbness or paralysis of the face, arm or leg on either or both sides of the body * Difficulty speaking or understanding * Dizziness, loss of balance or an unexplained fall *Loss of vision, sudden blurring or decreased vision in one or both eyes *Headache, usually severe and abrupt onset or unexplained change in the pattern of headaches *Difficulty swallowing The signs of stroke may occur alone or in combination and they can last a few seconds or up to 24 hours and then disappear. When symptoms disappear within 24 hours, this episode may be a mini stroke or Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA) Yesterday I told my in-laws Its better to be safe than sorry. Never be ashamed to rock up at emergency. You would rather go home feeling slightly embarrassed then risk not going home at all... I tell you guys the same...
