Arbitrator Rules Goodell Must Testify in Rice’s Appeal NEW YORK (WGGB) — The hearing on former Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice’s appeal of his indefinite suspension for domestic abuse will be held in early November. On Wednesday, the neutral arbitrator in the case said that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell must testify at that hearing. This latest development first came in an ESPN report, which said that it’s still uncertain whether Goodell will actually testify in a private arbitration. That’s because it is not a criminal case. Goodell has said that he will respect the decision of U.S. District Judge Barbara Jones, who will preside over the hearing on November 5th and 6th. She was picked by the commissioner and the players’ union to hear the appeal. Rice was suspended indefinitely on September 8th, after a video surfaced of him striking his then-fiancee Janay Palmer in an elevator. The Ravens promptly cut Rice and the league issued their ban. Previously, Rice had been suspended for two games for the attack. Rice met with Goodell and other league officials to discuss the allegations. Rice claims he explained in detail exactly what happened. Goodell maintains that Rice’s description was vague, leading to the controversially-light punishment.
