Archaeology Month! The Emigrant Springs Inscription Site is the location of a major emigrant camp and watering spot along the Slate Creek Cutoff of the Oregon-California National Historic Trail. The site is situated around a spring that is bounded on the north and east by sandstone cliffs, where hundreds of pioneer inscriptions tell the names, dates, places of origin, and destinations of the emigrants who stopped at this popular rest area on the trail. The Slate Creek Cutoff was first used in 1851 when wagon trains established a new crossing of the Green River, located about 20 miles east of the cutoff. Emigrant wagons that chose to take the cutoff may have spent the night at the site or taken their lunch break there depending on their progress down the trail. Many of the inscriptions appear to have been made with engraving tools, suggesting that some of the emigrants may have been stone masons.
