Are We Worthy of Christ??? Today’s Gospel According to Luke Lk 7:1-10 When Jesus had finished all his words to the people, he entered Capernaum. A centurion there had a slave who was ill and about to die, and he was valuable to him. When he heard about Jesus, he sent elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and save the life of his slave. They approached Jesus and strongly urged him to come, saying, “He deserves to have you do this for him, for he loves our nation and he built the synagogue for us.” And Jesus went with them, but when he was only a short distance from the house, the centurion sent friends to tell him, “Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof. Therefore, I did not consider myself worthy to come to you; but say the word and let my servant be healed. For I too am a person subject to authority, with soldiers subject to me. And I say to one, Go, and he goes; and to another, Come here, and he comes; and to my slave, Do this, and he does it.” When Jesus heard this he was amazed at him and, turning, said to the crowd following him, “I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith.” When the messengers returned to the house, they found the slave in good health. The Gospel of the Lord As Catholics, we say a prayer before receiving the Holy Eucharist, it goes, “Lord I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.” It was changed recently to, “Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.” The prayer we say is similar to the story from Luke in whom the Centurion feels he is unworthy for Christ to come to him and heal his servant. Christ was pleased with the soldiers actions he shouted out to his people that he had not seen such faith throughout Israel and the servant was healed. Worthiness with Christ is a state of being, in essence what we feel in our hearts. If our hearts are pure and with grace from the Holy Spirit, if our desires are pure for others, then Christ walks with us and stands in our shoes to meet whatever challenges we face. We hear so much through the scriptures that Christ was here to forgive and to bring forth a new covenant of Love and forgiveness. At that moment of divine grace when we reach to take his hand, Christ does not look upon as the sinners we are, but rather the praise and glory we are giving to Him. So much of our lives are spent on addressing our past sins, that we refrain from asking Christ to help us. We feel an unworthiness to be in his presence. If this be the case, then we are exactly the ones that Christ is calling out to join him. Always turn to Christ for everything in our lives and we will find he is there without judgement.
