** Are you a bad ass organizer? Ready to be an Environmental Justice leader? We want to meet you! ** OPAL Environmental Justice Oregon is looking to add a dynamic community organizer and leader to our team. OPAL builds power for Civil Rights and Environmental Justice in the communities in which we live, work, play and pray. We are a multi-racial/cultural organization working to address root causes of environmental racism and class-based oppression to bring about community empowerment and transformative change. Our work is grounded in EJ principles of meaningful participation and self-determination. This position – an experienced Community Organizer with the potential to become a Director of Organizing – will lead the development, coordination and implementation of our grassroots organizing campaigns and related policy advocacy. Strong candidates will have an understanding of environmental justice principles and leadership development, with a clear ability to develop trusted relationships with and inspire our core base. While our organizing work focuses on transit justice, it is expanding to include other urban EJ issues such as housing mobility, land use, air toxics and health equity. Position Details: - Position is full-time (exempt) with annual salary range of $32,500 to $40,000 (DOE) - Benefits include health, transit, PTO plus one-week paid holiday between Dec 25 & Jan 1 - Leadership opportunities within a dynamic team and growing movement Primary Duties: - Lead and manage community organizing and base-building in target communities - Develop and integrate campaign and organizational workplans advancing EJ values - Support development and implementation of leadership program to build capacity and skills among members and volunteers, including summer Organizers-in-Training cohort - Support policy analysis and advocacy through member participation Desired Qualifications: - Prior experience (supervisory preferred) in grassroots and campaign organizing - Understanding of environmental and social justice principles and experience working with and empowering low-income communities and people of color - Bi-lingual abilities and cultural awareness strongly preferred (specifically Spanish) - Significant leadership skills, initiative, passion and self-motivation - Demonstrated commitment to using innovative strategies for social change To apply, please send cover letter outlining your theory of change and passion for EJ along with your resume and two references to: Vivian Satterfield, Associate Director, vivian[at]opalpdx.org
