Are you aware of the disappearing Lake Chad ?. Located at the converging borders of Cameroon, Nigeria, Chad and Niger, the lake used to cover 25,000 km2 in 1963. It is now less than 5% of its original size. Scientific research shows that during the last 40 years, the following factors have contributed to the disappearing of Lake Chad: Overgrazing in the region, loss of vegetation, excessive deforestation and large and irresponsible irrigation projects. All these factors lead to a more arid climate. Further consequences are: water scarcity in the region, harvest losses, death of cattle, abandoning of fishing activities, soil salinity and poverty for up to 1 million.
