Arlington History In 1937 Bill Marriott, Sr. opened Hot Shoppe No. 8 on a one acre plot which adjoins Hoover Field. Mr. Marriotts newest Hot Shoppe was located where Rts. 1 and 395, Shirley Highway merge, by the 14th street bridge. Travelers on Military Road and Washington Blvd. were among The Hot Shoppes early patrons. Passengers going to Hoover Airport stopped by the Hot Shoppe to take food and drinks with them on their flight. Bill Marriott realized that providing food for flights might appeal to the airlines. He convinced Eastern Airlines that he could supply in-flight meals for their passengers. This agreement between them lead to the nations first airline catering service. Mr. Marriott went on the purchase more land and build the Twin Bridges Marriott Hotel. The original Hot Shoppe, shown in the photo, remained in service for a while after the Hotel was completed in 1952. Later the Hot Shoppe was demolished. The Twin Bridged Hotel, Mr. Marriotts first big Motor Hotel venture, was also demolished, in 1999. Becks Polar Bear Frozen Custard stand, showing a waving bear, is also gone from the scene. This was the establishment where Carl Sponseller worked before he moved to Fredericksburg in 1947 where he opened Carls Frozen Custard Stand, which even today, does a thriving business.
