Army soldiers ‘beat elderly, damage houses’ in Bandipora Bandipora, July 13: Army soldiers damaged houses and canned women and elderly here on Sunday morning, locals alleged. The troopers of Army’s 14th Rashtriya Rifles, according to the locals, barged into the houses in Greenland colony of Ajar area in Bandipora while chasing rock-throwing youth, who had filled the streets from early morning to mark the anniversary of killing of 21 Kashmiri non-combatants by Dogra soldiers on July 13, 1931. The youth fought pitched battles with police and paramilitary forces and when the forces started to leave the area the youth marched towards Kharpora Chowk that leads towards the Army and CRPF camp. Witnesses said that the army party was headed by an officer of the rank of a Major. “They entered forcibly into our houses and beat whosoever came in their way,” alleged Ghulam Muhmmad Mir, a local. A woman, Haleema Begum, who received injuries in her head after she was forced against a wall, has been shifted to a hospital in Srinagar, a health official, who was not authorized to speak to the media, told Greater Kashmir. Meanwhile, scores of locals have assembled in the main town square and are protesting against what they termed as ‘high-handedness’ of the army troopers. An Army official has, however, denied the accusations.
