Arqilla/Citadel: Yusuf Adil Khan, who was Bahmani governor of Bijapur province assumed autonomous rule from A.H 895/ A.D 1489; but he did not relinquished allegiance to Bahmani Sultans. The Bahmani province of Bijapur constituted his state with Bijapur as its capital. Yusuf laid the foundations of the walls of the Arqilla in 1512 A.D. in solid masonary, to form a lasting protection than its old dilapidated mud walls of Bahmani period afforded. Muhammad Qasim Ferishtah informs as that a mud fort originally stood on the side. As Yusuf was busy in the wars and administration of newly formed state, the construction of the walls took several years to complete.
