Arsenal are celebrating again after Arsene Wenger led the team to a strong end-of-season surge which saw them nab a Champions League place from Tottenham. But should joy be unconfined at the Emirates? It is now eight years since Arsenal last won a trophy, and, as a result of Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement and David Moyes’s new job, a curious statistic has emerged. Since Arsenal’s 2005 FA Cup victory – their last piece of silverware – EACH of the 91 other clubs in the Football League has now switched manager apart from the Gunners. And of course the trophies have been shared out around numerous clubs. Manchester United are a special case – they, of course, had managerial stability under Sir Alex Ferguson until his retirement this summer, but are now beginning afresh. But clubs which have seen considerably more chopping and changing – Chelsea the prime example – have also bagged trophies. So are Arsenal showing admirable faith to hold on to Wenger despite the barren years? Or are they standing still as other clubs make the changes they believe will get them to the top of the game.
