Artist: Alexander Alexandrovsky. Torzhok Morning 2014. Torzhok was founded by Novgorod merchants at the turn of IX-X centuries at the confluence of the stream in Tvertsa Zdorovtsev. The first mention of the city in the chronicles refers to 1139. Torzhok originated and developed as a trade settlement, changing in history by several names: Torg, Novi Torg and Torzhets. The city in the past was located at the intersection of land and waterways, which contributed to its economic development. In the XIII century it was surrounded by a stone wall, protected by an earthen rampart and moats and became a fortress. The city is in third place (after Novgorod and Staraya Russa) in the number of birch-bark scrolls found.
