Artist of the Month Spotlight: Barbara Mandrell I first have to admit that Ive been a life long of Barbara Mandrell so its hard for me to write a piece about here without getting into personal thoughts. Too many times, you read articles from a writer that when you are going through it, you can tell that there is a bias and critique is hard to come by. That is the farthest thing that I want in this. I personally believe that to be a real fan of someone, whether music, written word, film or television, there some things in a body of work that, even though you love and respect someone, not all work is equal throughout a multi decade career. Lets start by taking a look at the facts first: *Born on December 25, 1948 in Houston, Tx. to parents Irby and Mary Mandrell. Siblings Louise Mandrell (July 13, 1954) and Irlene Mandrell (January 29, 1956). *Has recorded for four major labels: Columbia, ABC/Dot, MCA, EMI/Capitol. She recorded her demo record, Queen For A Day for Mosrite Records in 1968. *Winner of every major music award including: Academy of Country Music 6 wins Music City News Awards (later renamed TNN/Music City News Awards) 9 wins Country Music Association 4 wins (2 of these wins were for Entertainer of the Year in 1980 and 1981, the first artist to win consecutively) American Music Awards 6 wins Peoples Choice Awards 10 wins Grammy Awards 2 wins (both wins for Gospel recordings) Gospel Music Hall of Fame induction Musicians Hall of Fame induction Country Music Hall of Fame induction *Married Kenneth Dudney May 28, 1967. Parents to three children: Matthew, Jaime and Nathaniel. *22 studio albums to her credit, 1 live album and 7 compilations (major studios) of her work. Per Billboard magazine, has had 55 singles place in the top 100 country music charts, 6 of those being number ones. So…this is just the start of our journey at the look of the music of Barbara Mandrell. Up next, we will be taking a look at each of her albums and breaking them down. This is going to be fun! Here is a peak at the 45 that started it all!
