Artists in this years Arpan...an Offering...contd Kathak Dancer: Radhika Patwardhan In India, there are many traditional styles of classical dancing. Kathak is a type of classical dance, originating in the Northern region of the country. The name Kathak is derived from the Sanskrit word katha meaning story, and kathak means to do with stories, or one who tells stories. There are 2 many divisions within Kathak, referred to as “Gharana”, Jaipur Gharana and Lucknow Gharana. Radhika has trained under teachers from the Jaipur Gharana. The Jaipur Gharana is characterised by complex and powerful footwork, multiple spins and complicated compositions in different talas. Training: - Started to learn dance at the age of 4 in Dubai, performing to mainly Bollywood music. - Simultaneously also learnt to sing Hindustani classical music. - At the age of 9, commenced training in Kathak under Punam Gaurkhede, who has learnt - Kathak under Guru Natarajan Bode. - At the age of 16, started to train under Ruchi Sanghi, who has been taught by Guruji Shri Gopi Krishna. - Currently, Radhika is studying at James Cook University and continues to practice - Kathak; she aims to complete her training upon graduation from University. Performances: - 2013- Cultural Festival Townsville - 2013- Marathi Sammelan Sydney; brief appearance on Marathi television as part of promotion for the celebration. - 2012- Cultural Festival Townsville - 2010- Nautch Girls Production - 2009- Vishwaas presents Gandhi: the Power of One, Charity production for Medical Students Aid Project (MSAP) - 2008,2009- Diwali program - 2007- Performed for Cancer Council Australia. - 2007 Marathi Sammelan Sydney - 2004, 2005 performed in Durga Zhali Gauri a dance production in Sydney for SEVA foundation. - She has won numerous awards as a young child in dancing, and is extremely passionate about dance.
