As 2015 closes in, I find it hard to explain the rituals and celebrations of the New Year with our clients. Most of us ring in the New Year with a toast and promises to work harder, work smarter, lose weight, right a wrong and so on. It is hard to explain this to a kid who has moved from one house to another 7 times in the last two years, or been in the hospital 4 times, he lives this “New Year” routine every day!! In their lives, they have been forced to right a wrong, make promises to work harder and smarter on every aspect of their lives with the hope that they will be accepted and loved at some point before sorrow and heartache are all they have left. I have learned a lot in working with our clients, listening to their stories and reading their files and “Happy New Year” really doesn’t represent what I always thought it did. In working with our clients, I have learned that Happy New Day is more appropriate because in their lives, a year is way too long. Greet each day with the same enthusiasm you greet the new year and you will be amazed at what you can accomplish. Our clients do it, they have to!! Each day for them not getting beaten, starved, molested, helping their parents with their drug habits, etc. are all wins in their minds and therefore they put the past hurts of yesterday behind them and greet the new day with a little more optimism than they did yesterday. Each day gives us the same opportunity that the new year brings, the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others and within yourself!! God bless, John
