As Colombo still luxuriates in the lingering and nostalgic afterglow of The Workshop Players stunning production of the Phantom of the Opera ....... do you hear the people sing ???? EXTRACT FROM THE BONSOIR DIARIES - Colombo’s theatre lovers were privileged when Jerome L. de Silva (JLdeS) and his enthusiastic band of Workshop Players decided to do ‘Les Mis’ the musical at the Lionel Wendt in Colombo in October 1996 ....... Two performances that were stellar, in my opinion, were those of Jehan Aloysius (19) as the protagonist Jean Valjean and Sanjeev Jeyaratnam (26) as Inspecteur Javert ....... These were two young men, playing characters much, much older than their real selves. The both of them didn’t hide behind their make-up and costumes but instead ‘lived’ their assumed personae to near perfection on those multiple nights at the Lionel Wendt ...... Jehan Aloysius and Sanjeev Jayaratnam have matured and proved themselves over the years - Jehan as a versatile actor and very talented playwright (‘Rags’ etc) and Sanjeev as the driving force behind one of Sri Lanka’s finest and internationally award winning choral ensembles ‘The Revelations’. Both still possess brilliant voices, now matured and maturing with age! youtube/watch?v=dOlKBX7BzpI
