As EMICS doctors, we encounter severe trauma and resulting death on an unfortunately regular occurrence, as do our Helemed and EMAS crews. So you could claim that we get used to it. Last night, I attended a fatal road traffic collision and confirmed death in which a patient of mine I knew very well and looked after for 20 years in General Practice died immediately on scene. A man in his 50s. A man with a wife. 12 hours later, I am talking to the distressed and distraught wife about the loss of her husband, her best friend. And you know what, it still hurts, it still saddens me, and that sentiment is shared by all of my emergency colleagues. I suppose that is why we provide our services because there are times we can make a difference and that is a feeling shared by all of us.
