As I grew up in the tea highlands in Muranga every evening, my grandpa Joram listened to the BBC World Service at his favourite bench outside as he soaked his feet in warm water and talked to my grandma Joyce as she prepared the evening meal. Being the only grandchild then, they loved n spoilt me but I was never to come close to the Sanyo radio. So I sat fascinated by the small talking box and I admired the trapped voice and I vowed to become a journalist one day.Later I fell in love with newspapers and my grandpa would challenge me to read him a story from the newspaper every evening. And so my days were spent poring through acres of text ready for our orals in the evening.Throughout primary, secondary n university,my grandpa identified my interests in language n writing and he asked all to support my passion.Growing up later in the hospital environment where my parents worked i was thrown into the world of medicine and I read medical books and wrote short essays of diseases I read about during the day.I became interested in health n Science but not to become a doctor.I didnt qualify for a journalism degree but my grandpa told me an English n Literature would do as as a first degree and pay for journalism as my second. So I delved into English n Lit at K.U. I joined journalism shortly thereafter was drawn to the world of health writing and networks over the years have enriched my writing. One particular medical encyclopaedia given by my mother in my first year of journalism at the Daily Nation is one of my best resources because gave it to me even if she uses it at work. When my mum reads my stories and she says she is proud especially because medical jargon is not a platter served for all, am motivated to pen more. Am not yet where I want to be but i have come this far because someone believed in me,became patient with me when I couldnt understand how body functions, becomes diseased, yet they gave me a chance.Nurture those young minds. They will remember you one day.
