As I often have trouble sleeping. I was up all night watching movies. One of the string of mindless entertainment was, The Lone Survivor An American Navy Seal ends up being saved by a group of Afghan villagers. The villagers did so at extreme risk. Risk to themselves, their wives and children. These villagers has no particular love for the US, also no love for the Taliban. They risked there lives for this invader under the principles of PASHTUNWALI. A Pashtun code of life. The relevant principles are. (1) Melmastia(hospitality) - Showing hospitality and profound respect to all visitors, regardless of race, religion, national affiliation or economic status and doing so without any hope of remuneration or favour. Pashtuns will go to great lengths to show their hospitality. (2) Nanawatai (asylum) - Derived from the verb meaning to go in, this refers to the protection given to a person against his or her enemies. People are protected at all costs; even those running from the law must be given refuge until the situation can be clarified. SO WHEN THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION ASKED THAT THE TALIBAN (PASHTUN) TURN OVER THE HERO OF THEIR REVOLUTION.THEY RESPONDED UNDER THIS 2000 YR. OLD PRINCIPLE. I RECALL THEY NEVER REFUSED TO TURN OVER BIN-LADEN THEY ASKED IF THERE WAS ANY PROOF OF HIS GUILT. THE ADMINISTRATION INPATIENT BEGAN THE BOMBING SHORTLY THEREAFTER. THIS OF COURSE TRIGGERED ANOTHER PRINCIPLE...Nyaw aw Badal (justice and revenge).....AS I WATCHED HOLLYWOODS DEPICTION OF THE FERVOR WITH WHICH THOSE VILLAGERS DEFENDED THAT AMERICAN SOLDIER. I COULD NOT HELP BUT THINK THAT HAD WE TAKEN THE TIME TO LEARN THE CULTURE OF THE NATION WE INVADED THAT PERHAPS...JUST PERHAPS A WAR COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED......I ALSO FOUND IT SOBERING THAT SUCH A PEOPLE HAVE NO TIME LIMIT ON REVENGE.. FROM ALEXANDER TO THE ROMANS TO GENGHIS KHAN TO THE BRITISH EMPIRE TO THE SOVIETS AND NOW THE U.S.A. THESE PEOPLE HAVE NOT BEEN CONQUERED.
