As I sat down to my meal this evening, a homeless man walked into - TopicsExpress

As I sat down to my meal this evening, a homeless man walked into the dining establishment and proceeded to walk right up to my table. He asked me: Could you spare 50 cents, sir? Sure I replied, and I reached down to pull 75 cents out of my pocket and set it on the table. He grabbed the money, walked up to the counter, and bought himself a soda. I began to contemplate why out of a room full of people, he decided to ask me for help. Perhaps it was because I was in uniform? Or maybe because I was sitting alone, he thought I would be an easier target. I began to notice how skinny and malnourished he was, the man must have been starving. As he started towards the door, I took a second glance down at the mountain of a four course meal that lay before me on the table and suddenly I wasnt even hungry anymore. In fact, I felt almost disgusted with myself. I stopped the man and asked him if he was hungry, to which of course he replied: Yes. Very hungry. By this point, everyone in the restaurant was staring at us. You could hear a pin drop. I gave the man my meal, and he was very grateful. He gave me a fist bump, and I started for the door myself as a group of people stopped to thank me. I told them not to thank me, because most of us already have much, much more than we need.
